PLANING TO TRAVEL NURSE WITH THE KIDS? SOME TIPS TO THINK ABOUT...
Ever thought of quitting your job and hitting the road with the kids?
Is every week starting to feel like groundhog day?
Luckily, being a nurse can give our families the opportunity to work and travel. Here are some answers to things that may stop you from making this a reality.
How will I afford it?
Nursing your way around Australia is possible... Join an agency and check out the contracts that are on offer. Some rural/remote locations offer great incentives like accomodation, travel reimbursement, subsidised electricity and district allowances. These make travel more sustainable and affordable.
What about the house?
Many nurses rent out their houses whilst they are on the road. With opportunities for subsided rental options from your employer you can often continue to pay off your mortgage.
What about the kids school?
There are many options for schooling they days. Home schooling is one option and online options now exist to support distance education for school kids (parents). Another option, is to take on longer contracts that fit in with school terms and then you can enrol in schools as you move around. Think of all the great experiences your kids will have. And learning to make new friends at new schools is a great skill to have....Of course, a mixture of these two options is also possible depending on your planed itinerary.
What work experience do I need?
Often nurses with emergency skills find it easier and have more options to get contracts. Having said that nurses with acute experience are also in demand in larger rural locations. And of course, midwives are very much sort after. Some courses to consider are, ALS, triage and PALS for rural. And add the MEC, REC, immunisation and pharmacology for remote placements. Check out the CRANA page for some course ideas!
